What Does 916 Gold Mean? A Simple Guide for Gold Buyers

A guide from Kolkata Gold Price

If you have ever bought gold jewellery in India, you may have seen 916 or 22K916 stamped on it.

But what does 916 gold actually mean?

The simple answer is: 916 gold means the item contains 91.6% pure gold. It is commonly known as 22K gold in India.

Why Is It Called 916 Gold?

Gold purity can be shown in two common ways: karat and fineness.

In the karat system, pure gold is considered 24K. In India, BIS recognises 22K916 as one of the standard grades for hallmarked gold jewellery.

The number 916 means that out of 1,000 parts of the metal, approximately 916 parts are gold.

916 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 91.6% gold

The remaining 8.4% usually consists of other metals such as copper or silver. These metals make the jewellery stronger and more suitable for regular use.

Is 916 Gold the Same as 22K Gold?

Yes. In the Indian jewellery market, 916 gold generally means 22K gold.

You will often see the marking 22K916. This tells you both the karat and fineness of the jewellery.

By comparison, 24K fine gold is around 99.9% pure, 22K916 gold is 91.6% pure, 18K750 gold is 75% pure, and 14K585 gold is 58.5% pure.

How Much Pure Gold Is in 916 Gold?

The calculation is simple.

If you have 10 grams of 916 gold: 10 × 91.6% = 9.16 grams of gold.

So, theoretically, a 10-gram 916 gold article contains around 9.16 grams of gold, with the remaining 0.84 gram made up of other metals.

For 50 grams of 916 gold: 50 × 91.6% = 45.8 grams of gold.

This purity calculation is useful when comparing different gold grades.

Why Is 916 Gold Popular for Jewellery in India?

Pure 24K gold is very soft. It can bend or lose shape more easily, making it less practical for many types of jewellery.

916 or 22K gold contains a small amount of other metals, which gives it extra strength while keeping the gold content high.

That is why 22K916 is commonly used in India for bangles, chains, necklaces, earrings, rings, wedding jewellery and traditional gold jewellery.

It offers a useful balance between high gold purity and durability.

Does 916 Automatically Mean BIS Hallmarked?

No. Seeing only the number 916 on jewellery is not enough to confirm that it has been properly BIS hallmarked.

According to BIS, a current hallmark on gold jewellery includes the BIS logo, purity in karat and fineness such as 22K916, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID.

The HUID is unique to the hallmarked item and can be checked using the Verify HUID feature in the BIS CARE app.

This is important because anyone could theoretically stamp 916 on a piece of jewellery. A proper BIS hallmark gives independent assurance about the declared purity.

Hallmarking Has Become Widespread in India

India has steadily expanded mandatory gold hallmarking.

By August 2026, mandatory hallmarking had been extended to 392 districts across India.

Government data also showed that more than 60 crore gold items had been hallmarked with HUID between July 2021 and 5 March 2026.

These numbers show how important purity verification has become in India's gold market.

What Should You Check When Buying 916 Gold?

Before buying 916 gold jewellery, check the complete hallmark rather than looking only for 916.

Look for 22K916, the BIS logo and the six-digit HUID. Verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app.

Also check the jewellery's weight, making charges, GST and final invoice before paying.

Final Word

916 gold means 91.6% pure gold and corresponds to 22K gold.

It is one of the most commonly used purity levels for gold jewellery in India because it combines high gold content with better strength than very pure 24K gold.

Do not trust the number 916 alone. Check the complete BIS hallmark and verify the HUID before buying.
